Tonight is the night. Again the administration had hoped to have had a traditional ceremony, which is why they decided to postpone the ceremony until today. No matter what, Mr. Pruett was going to make sure the students walked the stage. If you haven’t noticed the stage is set, the signs are out for driving, programs are printed and folded, announcement cards are cut and ready, and we are hoping the pens arrive today (please bring a writing utensil just in case). The speeches and announcements video is scheduled to go live at 5:45 pm today (a little earlier than previously announced). Cars may start arriving at 6:00 pm. As a reminder, Mr. Pruett has already arranged for a lead car to bring in the group, so they will be placed at the beginning of the motorcade when they arrive. Please be patient as we start the Motorcade of Graduates at 7:00 pm. We know there will be a long line of vehicles and we ask that you enjoy your time with your family. Make sure to bring water to stay hydrated. Please share any photos you take tonight and tag Orestimba in them.
Graduation is scheduled for July 31st. Cars will be able to begin lining up at 6:00 pm. The graduation motorcade and livestreaming will begin at 7:00pm.

The Star Polisher By Leah Becks "I have a great job in the universe of occupations. What do I do? I'm a star polisher. It's a very important job. If you want to know how important, just go out at night and look at the stars twinkling and sparkling. You see, I am a teacher. The stars are the children in my class. My job is to take them in - in whatever shape they come - and shine them and buff them, and then send them out to take their places as bright little twinkling beacons in the sky. They come into my room in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they're bent, tarnished, dirty, crinkly and broken. Some stars are cuddly, soft, and sweet. Some stars are prickly and thorny. As I buff, polish, train, and teach my little stars, I tell them that the world cannot do without them. I tell them they can do anything they set their minds to do. I tell them they can be the brightest, shiniest stars in the sky, and that the world will be a better place because of them. Each night as I look at the sky, I'm reminded of my very important job and awesome responsibility. I go and get my soft buffing cloth and my little bottle of polish in preparation for tomorrow and for my class of little stars." Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! Thank you to all of our wonderful teachers who continue to educate and inspire during this time.
Attention all PE and Weight Training students. The locker rooms will be open on Friday, May 8 from 8-11:00 am for all students to come in and pick up items from their lockers. Students will need to bring their own bags to carry their items home.

From Mr. Pruett: Dear Seniors of 2020, We as a staff and community know what your senior year means. It is one of the most important moments of your life, so far. As you go through life, there will be other milestones, but right now, this is the biggest for you. Things have not gone in any way that anyone could have predicted, but here we are, and we want to make sure our school, our families and our community get to celebrate your accomplishments. The Orestimba High School Staff wants to create a week that is all about you. We did not want to select a date early in the summer, just to be disappointed if it gets postponed again, so we have selected dates that are late in the summer before most of you head off in new directions pursuing your dreams. We realize the dates below may be cancelled; we have learned that nothing is certain. You need to know, however, that the staff at Orestimba cares about you getting a chance to celebrate your high school graduation. I know Mr. Reeves sent out notification that your senior trip was cancelled. I am sorry to say that due to the circumstances, we had little or no control over that disappointing decision, but we are working on a plan to make Prom 2020 free for every senior at Orestimba. You will still need to follow Mrs. Stearns’ instructions for signing up for and receiving prom bid, because we need to be able to plan for food and entertainment. We look forward to seeing you during senior week. Locations and times will be posted with updates: Prom: July 25 Baccalaureate: July 27th Senior sunset/ Senior Night Rave: July 29th 6pm to 9am Senior Awards: no date selected yet Graduation: July 31st
It is with a heavy heart that we have to send you this message. Due to the uncertainness of the current Covid-19 pandemic, we will be cancelling the annual senior trip to Southern California this year. Our account technician will be working on refunding all out of pocket payments made for the trip. Money earned for the trip through fundraisers, will be used for several end of the year activities. We know this is not the news you were hoping to hear. The administration and senior class advisors are working on a Senior Class Celebration that is scheduled for July 29th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 am on July 30th. There will be many activities for the graduating class to participate in that night. As the week goes on, there will be more announcements for new dates on Baccalaureate, Senior Awards, and of course graduation. As always, stay strong Warriors.

At this time, the health risk to the general public in California from novel coronavirus remains low. As with any virus, especially during the flu season, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your health and those around you. The Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District is advising parents, as we always do, to not send your child to school if they are sick.
Great news, with power fully restored in Newman we are expecting the school day to run as scheduled. All USDA guidelines are being followed and necessary precautions are being taken to ensure food safety for our students and staff following the power outage.
The power is back on in Newman and all schools are open. We are looking forward to seeing all of our students for a great Monday!
It appears that Newman could be without power until 3:30 pm tomorrow (2/10/2020). We will still open every school tomorrow as a safe place for children to be. There will be a limited food service tomorrow, no lights, no internet, but a lot of time to read books and build relationships!

As we near the end of our 24 hours, some have made the full 24 hours without "taking a nap" and some are starting to wake up. We have had board games, group events, tournaments, and physical challenges. The student officers also created their own maps and games, this year, and their planning, stress, and hard work created a memorable event for the participants.

In 1980, Dr. Victor DeNoble was recruited by the Philip Morris Tobacco company to study the behavioral and physiological effects of nicotine. After successfully identifying an innovative nicotine substitute, his attempts to publish his work were suppressed by Philip Morris. He was eventually fired from his job and all of his data, research and even his laboratory were seized. In 1994, he became the first “whistleblower” to begin tearing down the wall of secrecy built by the tobacco industry. He was a key witness in the federal government’s case against the industry and testified before congress. Now, Dr. DeNoble continues to raise awareness of the highly addictive nature of tobacco and other drugs.
